Our Services

Our Parkinson’s vision clinic provides an avenue for you to receive specialty care for all of your unique visual needs as a patient with Parkinson’s disease.

Your initial evaluation includes a comprehensive assessment of your visual function and ocular health, along with additional testing to screen for ocular conditions commonly associated with Parkinson’s disease. Based on your symptoms and examination findings, your care may be coordinated through one or more of our specialty clinics, where you will be seen by optometrists experienced in addressing the unique visual needs of individuals with PD.

About Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD) can affect just about every aspect of your vision. Patients with PD are more likely to have dry eyes (keratitis sicca) due to reduced tear production, reduced blink rate, and blocked eyelid oil glands.  PD may also impair reading and other visual tasks due to abnormalities in eye movements (difficulty crossing eyes, tracking difficulties, unsteady fixation).

In addition, consideration of PD-related symptoms is often important when monitoring and treating eye disease, or when prescribing specialty and low-vision devices to enhance visual function and quality of life. Our Parkinson’s Vision Clinic addresses comprehensive visual needs within a collaborative, multidisciplinary care environment.

Parkinson's Disease Facts

Visual hallucinations—seeing people, animals, or formed images—can occur in about 75% of people with Parkinson’s over the course of the disease.

Up to four out of five people with Parkinson’s report problems with everyday visual tasks such as reading, driving, and navigating spaces.
