Neuro-Evals is part of our Binocular Vision Clinic and serves a special population of patients who have suffered a variety of different acquired or traumatic brain injuries (ABI or TBI). These injuries can range from trauma and strokes to Lyme disease, Myasthenia Gravis, and Multiple Sclerosis. Patients suffering from vision problems due to these injuries may have difficulty driving, reading, cooking, using a computer, and other activities of daily living.

About Us

We perform an initial neuro-optometric evaluation to understand the patient’s visual perceptual skills and binocular vision system thoroughly. Based upon our results, we may recommend active vision therapy to strengthen the patient’s binocular vision system, and/or the patient’s visual perceptual skills.

Our Services

The Neuro-Optometry Clinic provides a wide variety of comprehensive and specialized tests during the 3-part Neuro-Evaluation. These include:

  • Evaluation of refractive error (near/farsightedness, astigmatism).
  • Evaluation of peripheral vision, visual function, and ocular health.
  • Evaluation of visual processing skills, visual response time, and left visual neglect syndrome.
  • Evaluation of eye focusing, eye teaming (including “convergence”), and eye coordination skills.
  • Evaluation of visual tracking skills.
  • Screening of vestibular function.

What to Expect

This evaluation is typically scheduled over three weeks. Each visit lasts approximately 90 minutes. A thorough report summarizing our findings and recommendations will be provided after the evaluation is complete. Pending our evaluation results, we also offer rehabilitative vision therapy. Generally, skills that addressed during therapy include:

  • Improving eye focusing, eye teaming, and eye coordination accuracy, stamina, and range.
  • Improving visual processing speed.
  • Improving various visual processing skills, such as visual memory.
  • Improving visual tracking and scanning.
  • Improving basic visual-vestibular function.

Neuro-Eval Clinic Facts

Since each TBI sufferer has a different clinical profile, goals for therapy are individualized and catered towards each patient's needs.

Rehabilitative Vision Therapy is typically scheduled weekly or every other week. Each visit lasts approximately 45 minutes. Home reinforcement activities are assigned for the patient to complete in between visits.
