What to Expect
Our eye clinic at UC Berkeley’s Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science serves thousands of patients each year, and while each patient is unique, we have compiled an overview of what to expect with a comprehensive eye exam from start to finish.

When You Arrive
On the day of your appointment, arrive at clinic and check in at one of our kiosks in the main lobby. Please be sure to bring the following:
- Bring a photo ID.
- Bring any forms that the doctor has asked you to fill out.
Once you’ve checked in, please proceed to the designated waiting area and fill out a health history form.
During Your Appointment
A typical comprehensive eye exam lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from start to finish, and includes a dilated health check of your eyes. As a teaching institution, our clinical team is composed of optometry students, resident doctors, and staff doctors. The exam will largely be conducted by a student clinician and is overseen by a resident or staff doctor.
After Your Appointment
By the end of your appointment, we will have checked for any glasses or contact lens prescription, evaluated the health of your eyes, and discussed the exam findings and any necessary follow-up appointments. You will be shown to the front desk to check out of your appointment, complete exam payments, and schedule any further exams. If you choose to order glasses, we encourage you to visit the eyewear center (located within our clinic), which offers a variety of glasses and sunglasses.
We look forward to serving you!
