About the new clinic in Emeryville

The clinic in Emeryville – which operates under the umbrella of the The Herbert Wertheim Centers of Excellence for Eyecare and Vision Health – offers an integrated model of adult and pediatric eye care and vision health that encompasses everything from well-baby and toddler pediatric clinics to disease management, binocular vision, vision therapy, special needs eye care, myopia control and more. The Emeryville site’s 39,400 gross square feet includes 40 exam lanes, therapy rooms for sports vision and BV, a retail eyewear center, and an academic center for continuing education.

Why we opened a new eye care clinic

Our University Eye Center was designed in 1978 for 5,000 patient visits annually. The combined number of patient visits to the University Eye Center and the Tang Center (both on the UC Berkeley campus) now exceeds 60,000 annually, making it difficult to meet growing demand.

What services are offered at the new Emeryville clinic?

The new Emeryville clinic doubles our clinical capacity, expands opportunities for world-class education and research, and advances an exciting new model for integrated adult and pediatric optometric care. More specifically, it will offers general and advanced eye care service and treatment for adults and children; specialty pediatric eye care, including infant, toddler, and children’s clinics; special vision assessment clinics; binocular vision clinics; vision therapy and rehabilitation; a concussion clinic; a myopia management clinic; a sports vision clinic; and a state-of-the-art eyewear center, all under one roof.

How is the new clinic funded?

The funding for this project is coming from a variety of sources. A generous seed gift of $10m from the Herbert Wertheim Family Foundation — part of the $50m donation from the Wertheims — and a $17m in-kind gift from the campus for the building in Emeryville, as well as $10m from the school form the bulk of the project’s funding.
